At the end of June I went to Austria for a week. I spent a good chunk of time in Vienna and the rest of it with my host family in Ternitz (small village south of Vienna).
I met up with a friend from when I was an exchange student who happens to still live in Vienna. We went to this lovely winery, on top of a hill, overlooking Vienna, two nights in a row. They had a fantastic selection of appetizers with a Mediterranean/Austrian theme. We had grilled capsicum, stuffed pepper dews and tomatoes, pita bread with hummus and garlic dips, olives etc to go with the wine.
The above is Stephansdom or St. Stephans Cathedral in Vienna. I acted like a tourist for a day and jumped on the hop on hop off bus which goes to all the major sightseeing landmarks in the inner city. It was sunny and warm in the morning but then all of sudden there was a big rain storm for an afternoon.
Even though I had spent a lot of time here in 2008/2009 I forgot how beautiful and clean (!!) Vienna really is. Above in the middle is the parliament building. And to the right is one of the main shopping/eating/tourist-y areas of central Vienna - Stephansplatz.
Austrian pancakes! "Palatschinken" is common in Central and Eastern Europe and is very similar to a crepe. These ones were filled with nutella! I also ate a lot of Greek food because it's cheap and yum. And of course cake...You can not go to Austria without cake and coffee.
A sunrise in Vienna.
Next post will be about meeting my host family again after five years away!
